my kids want to try raising tadpoles from a local creek. I am not sure what the best container to do this in would be. I really don't want to have to go buy an aquarium

Any large flat plastic container that can hold a few inches of water. If it's not more than 2" deep there will be enough air that diffuses in to have enough oxygen for them. One of the plastic shoebox size will be good for a few smaller tadpoles, or a larger box of this type for larger tadpoles. Just make sure the water gets changed periodically with water that's the same temperature as what they're in (don't add cold creek water once they've been out of it, but let it stand at least overnight). And when they start forming legs, they'll need a rock to be able to get out of the water. Once they're on land, it's best to let them go.

I raised tadpoles before :) Get a 10 gallon tank WITH A COVER! you must have a rock that reaches the surface of the water for them to jump out when they turn to frogs. I don't recommend you keeping them after they turn to frogs. Release them back to the creek after they turn to frogs. They will need algae in that tank, so since the tank will be new and wont have algae built up already give them algae supliments and reptile/amphibian food which you can buy at walmart and/or a pet store. Provide real or fake plants and make sure that the filter doesnt drop strait into the water, make it run off the rock so that it wont push the frogs (when they grow to them) down into the filter-tube where they will get stuck and die.

EDIT:

I recommend you get some type of fish. I don't know if it is true, but I think they eat fish poop also. I vote you get fancy guppies. They're real pretty

probably a small aqaurium with about an inch or two of the water from the stream. i would say a five gallon for no more than 30 tadpoles. you will have to provide them with live plants and a substrate bottom with rocks for them to hide under, you could also buy a cave like decoration from a petstore made for fish tanks for them to hide in, prepare your kids to know if they collect about 30 tad's only 5 or 6 may develope into frogs depending on how you feed them, the first couple of days i would just leave some live plants that your kids can collect from the stream for them to feed off of if you have any more questions just ask!! hope i could help!!

oh p.s.: You must release the tad's after they devolope into frogs!
