They are going to need a lot of support. Think about who they will be calling (you, perhaps? ;-) and which type of computer that person is familiar with.
All things being equal, the Mac comes with some easy-to-use photo album, movie editing and music playing programs. Also, the email client and web browser is simple but powerful. It will be frustrating for them however if they cannot get precise help.
I bought my Dad a Mac, thereby appointing myself as his tech support guy... ;-) I don't mind, and an added benefit was that his neighbor can't come over and mess up the computer by installing his goofy programs.
I bought an iMac for my (ex) wife's step-father, and he complained about the fact that his neighbor couldn't come over and mess up the computer by installing goofy programs... but he complains about everything. I should have bought him a PC. (Thankfully, I no longer have to deal with him...)
As you can see, it's not simply an issue of which computer is better... ;-)
peace

I your case I strongly suggest a PC. The reason is just about anybody can help them out with the basics, but with a MAC they will have to find someone who knows that computer to answer any questions they may have.
Granted a MAC is less likely to get a virus or spyware but they are (in spite of MAC'S ads) a more specialized machine, great for graphics and desktop publishing.

Wendy, you didn't say what kind of a Mac you had. Was it a MacBook (not designed for gaming), was it an iMac? (can handle most games well), was it a MacBook Pro (also plays games well)? If what ever you did last time, is happening again, there is a problem with what you are doing. Are you turning off the applications you aren't using? You have to turn them off, not close the window. Are you using it on a rug to block the vent fans? More info would help.

A PC is def. a better price. Though Macs are pretty user friendly and don't get all the viruses that PCs do. But I agree with the other answer a PC is probably the best bet.

A simple PC would be best. MAC has way too many proprietary software issues. Its easier and cheaper to buy peripherals, and software for a PC than it is a MAC.

Hmmm.... I'd say a PC, they cost a lot less. And I would go with one of these
