Reading anything si a good thing. It excersizes your brain in more ways then one. The more challenging the material you read, they more excersize, and Potter is pretty deep stuff.

But your probably asking from a moral standpoint and a lot of people say potter is "satanic, it has all that witches and stuff..." These are people who don't read. And this mentality is why you should read Potter - so you don't get this mentality.

A few years ago, an African American group moved to ban "Huckleberry Finn" from public libraries because it used the "N" word. Frequently. And so it does. However, had any of the people on this committee actually "READ" Huckleberry Fin, they would have realized some things about it. Such as: The "N" word is venacular and was in common usage during the era. Twain used it as a device. Twain was an abolutionist and dear Friends with Frederick Douglass - often accompaning him on tours for black freedom and black voting rights. Everyone who says the "N" word in the book is a moron - intentionally. The only black character (JIM) in the book is the only really decent human being in the whole story. Jim changed Huck into a decent Human Being by his example. Jim is the hero of the book and the book was Twain's statement about how stupid it is to hate people because of the color of their skin. Not really a book an African American Group should want banned.

Read Potter - read one of them. If *YOU* find it objectional, don't read any more. If not, collect the set. You will find that there is a serious discussion of good and evil in this book, and the good side is a bunch of humans who are basically following the precets of good as announced in every single religon in the world.

Don't let other people think for you. That's what a good book can teach you.

Reading is a good thing in itself. The Harry Potter series is good writing. So reading Harry Potter is a good thing.

I disagree with "reading anything is good." If a book isn't challenging, it's NOT exercising your brain. The Harry Potter books are teaching a generation of kids that bad fiction is actually good, that anyone with half an idea should write a book. Further, since Rowling STOLE most of her ideas from previous fantasy writers, she's teaching that stealing from dead people and profiting off them is OK.

But people will tell you that I am wrong, that my opinion is only an opinion. This is true, but it is a fact that challenging writing is NEVER popular. I read the bestsellers ONLY to shut off my brain and NOT think while I'm on a plane or on the beach. I do not pretend that I'm reading literature when I'm reading The Devil Wears Prada, the Harry Potter books, or any of the other toilet paper on the bestsellers rack.

If you read the Harry Potter books, keep in mind that there are libraries full of actual literature. If you take too big a leap into the world of terrible writing, you might be stuck there forever.

I do not know why there is such a hype about a small book.
It is for entertainment and it being a good or bad book will not affect you reading it.
But in general, HP is a good book, and I suggest you read it.
Reading a book, in general , is a good thing. And Harry Potter is no exception.

If you feel it will influence you beyond measure, think twice.
But if you read it just as a book, it is a good thing.

What do you mean exactly? Reading is a good thing and we really don't have a right to say what is a 'good thing.' Besides, Harry Potter got people hooked on reading again which is really important.

While I personally wouldn't read any more Harry Potter books, anything that gets people reading, thinking, and imagining is a good thing. The Hairy Potter books give people a glimpse into classic literary themes and will hopefully make readers curious.
