It is instinctive, all small infants know how to feed on mommy.

it's an instinctive thing that most very small babies will do, you didn't say how hold he was, but I'm assuming only a few weeks? If he's still only a few weeks old, he may also smell the milk, babies have incredible sense of smell. Even if you never breastfed him, your body still made milk, and his instincts may be telling him that you smell really good - like food good - even though that's not where the food comes from, LOL.

The rooting instinct, as this way of seeking food is called, is something that babies lose over time, usually by a few months of age (4-6). My son WAS breastfed, and used to root so enthusiasticly he even sounded like a baby pig! Enjoy it while it lasts, it's a very cute stage that doesn't last long :)

It's thousands of years of instinct...... babies have been breast fed since the dawn of mankind. It's only been in the last 50 years or so when formula started taking over.

They just naturally know from instinct because they were born like that.

Natural instinct for an infant to look for food where nature intended it to be.

It's called "rooting"

As everyone has said...instincts.

My son did the same.

And to hypermomma....you make it out like she is a bad mother for not breastfeeding. Some women can't breastfeed due to lack of milk, or the infant simply won't take the milk.

As long as she's feeding her child, and taking care of his needs, she's doing fine.

Your baby is listening to his instincts. Wish his mama had done the same. Even a BABY knows that he is supposed to have BREASTMILK!

To ashley t: She says right there she "never even tried" this baby WANTS to nurse and she can't be bothered!

It's because babies are supposed to breastfeed. They know instinctually where the milk should be.
