I think a horse shoe would be good but I think that would be in the advance stage.

When I was young and up at my father's farm. I used to watch the local blacksmith and he used to make pliers and hammer heads for the fencing people, who used to like his quality smithy products.

You should suggest a coat hanger stand that will keep him busy for a while. At least he is going into a trade where there is a good demand for blacksmiths.

The artwork involved in making replacement parts for old farm machinery is in demand as well for those collectors of steel.

There are a thousand answers to this question. Most smiths start out by making a few hooks of different designs. The can be for hanging a hand towel or a jacket, or a large hook to hang your garden hose. They are easy and very useful. There are lots of resources online for blacksmiths of all skill levels. Feel free to email me directly and I'll point him in the right direction.
