It seems really odd that rap music songs that degrade women, and promote violence against women, should sell so well with modern girls? Is it they don't care, or just like anything controversial or popular?

I have often wondered this myself. Personally, I don't listen to anything anti-woman, but a lot of girls clearly do. What about that Eminem song where he's killing his wife in front of his little girl? Ugh, I really waited for the women of the world to come out against him, and a few did....but most did not.

I think it must be a problem of measuring benefits. The girls each judge that the loss of popularity, and perhaps dates, that they would experience, is too high a cost to bear for objecting to sexist lyrics. If all the other girls objected, too, it would be fine, but they don't want to be singled out.

The other option is that they really DON'T care, which frankly terrifies me. I shudder at the thought of my little girl going to Junior High school and learning that her "place" in the world is to smile weakly when a popular rap song degrades her - or else, be shunned by her friends.

Well like I said before Im not any of the women these guys degrade on a rap song(AND PLEASE TELL ME A SONG ABOUT RAPING WOMEN AND HITTING THEM, BESIDES the Immortal Technique song) I dont listen to songs that talk about raping women but I have heard some rap songs that said they'll slap a b*tch or h*e...I mean I cant really get mad at those rappers who make that type of music when women are out shaking their tails and prostituting, how am I SUPPOSE TO STAND UP FOR THOSE WOMEN WHO DONT WANT TO BE BOTHERED...I know Im a classy female and guys know it when they see me, so they dont call me a b*tch or a H*e...I feel those are just words and if the shoe fits the person then why not wear it...AND THE SAME GOES FOR GUYS, women call guys out their name, and I know I do, if the guy is acting a certain way then YEAH WHY NOT lol

I'm not tolerant one little bit of that trash that degrades women.
One artist in particluar, Enimen, I would love to give him a good hard slap, because he's just a little boy that's been raised without any respect whatsoever for the opposite gender.
The only reason he gets any women at all is because he's got money from promoting hatred against women, and if he had none, he would just be a poor sad and lonely little man.
I do care about that kind of music, and I won't stand to hear it in my house at all.

Because it's nearly unheard of to go against popular culture in this society. Just like the young women who expose their goodies for a t-shirt on that Girls Gone Wild crap, it's considered normal to objectify oneself in order to fit in. The young women who take a stand against popular culture (regardless of what popular culture actually entails at the time) are at risk of being unheard, verbally/physically assaulted, or worse.

The thing is, if a young woman doesn't agree with what the culture around her expects her to do, she is called a "dyke" or a "man-hater" and almost nobody will vouch on her behalf. It's hard being a strong-minded woman in this world, period. Furthermore, women aren't encouraged to *think* - this means all of the adolescent girls out there (yes, this means your daughters, nieces, grandaughters, etc.) simply go with the flow - it's entirely possible that half of them don't think to even closely listen to the lyrics they're exposed to, and simply internalize the messages the music imparts.

this is a tough one,but i will try and give an answer. i listen to all types of music, hip hop - rock - country ........

i don't find the lyrics offensive due to the fact i view it as simply entertainment. alot of the lyrics women do find offensive are meant in a somewhat off key complimentary way - such as the references to "big a**es" all the time - i think it's good that those men are telling the world that they find a woman with curves attractive - you can find the positive in anything, and the negative - you just have to look beyond the surface. curvy women are more attractive to mainstream now because of those songs and those references.

some have mentioned the beat, which is true - there is alot of great dance music in that genre that gets you going - and shakin your booty to me is always a fun and good thing =D

it is true that alot of lyrics are what could be considered "horrible" such as "bi***es ain't shi* fu** hoes and tricks" -snoop dogg- but,you can filter thru to find something more appealing to you personally. i am not offended,i think it's very tongue and cheek - some may think i am uneducated,or just trying to fit in - that isn't the case.

i hope i made some type of valid point here,it's always hard for me to give an accurate answer on a subject like this one - i am a very expressive person, and prefer to speak rather than type =)

thanks for the question.

because we know its not really ment...you have to have a sense of humour about lots of things in the world today or else you'd be driven mad by Q's such as this one....Anyway that doesnt mean that if anything like whats said in rap songs was tried on us we would'nt stop it......But then again it does probably promote violence/sexual violence towards women to some weirdo men out there who may actually get wraped up in it and do it for real......but you cant not saay something just because some weirdo might take it up wrong.

That is a very good question. I do like rap music, but the older set that most young people today do not remember...Africa Bambada..etc.. today rap is all about sex, money, pimpin, etc.. I can not see why any woman would spend two seconds listening to it.

Mainstream rap sucks and totally promotes misogyny in the name of the bottom line: Skittles or is it M&M?, Notorious BIG, Fifty Cents are all part of corporate rap/entertainment persona.
On the other hand, "hip hop" artists like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common and Dead Prez, do not "promote violence against women" and if lyrics seem a little derogatory they are usually metaphors (that unfortunately the stupid masses don't grasp).
However, with that said I am a huge Wu Tang fan, except of ODB because he is (or was) a misogynist, but Wu Tang has 7 or 8 members so I can forgive them if one or two has a little macho man complex while the others like RZA and GZA are making art with lyrical masterpieces and fat a/ss beats.
* to answer your question the ones that listen to "rap" are victims of mainstream media*

There is plenty of hateful music out there, not just "rap"ever listen to that death metal, "hate, kill, hate" ****? That stuff creeps me out.

*EDIT: btw mainstream "rap" is dying fast...**
Here are some lyrics about being a father in which at least two out of the three hip hop artists I mentioned have written and quite beautifully and tell me this is degrading to women.

It must be the beat and their hearing is limited considerably.
When do people stop buying the lyrics that are so offensive?
Why not make them respect women better in words and in deeds?

Maybe because they don't acutuly listen to it or they don't think of it happening to them. But I agree that it is wrong that they do that unrespectfull of women but as long as we keep buying it nothing going to change.
