I think that term is a psychological cop out. But generally, it means the "person", it happens to women and men, realizes their life is half over and that they feel they've accomplished nothing. So they start trying to act younger and start trying to complete all those goals they had in their 20s, no matter how stupid they may be.

Mid life crisis is just an excuse men use for their lustful behavior with younger women. He starts seeing himself getting older, he looks in the mirror and says "Dad?" That's when he gets scared about life and the fact he is an old fart now and decides he needs to find out if he can still attract the young sl**s of the world. It is worse than pitiful. No excuse for this behavior other than lust. What's even worse is the stupid 20 year olds who go for the old geezers.

He says life is a bore.

He is thinking about (or already) having an affair.

He is suddenly making impetuous decisions about money and/or his career.

He makes a dramatic change in his personal style or appearance and is suddenly spending lots of time in front of a mirror.
He has little interest in spending time (or having sex) with you.
He is drinking too much or abusing other substances.

He is displaying the classic signs of depression -- sleeping more, loss of appetite, malaise.

He is overly nostalgic and constantly reminiscing about his youth or his first love.

For women, this crisis is called "menopause", and for men, it's called "andropause"....

When people start wondering if they are old, if they are happy and if they have gotten what they wanted out of life, they examine it and if they decide that they still have things to do, they go ahead and do them.
Signs are both external and internal.

There's no such thing. It's usually just an excuse for people to have sex with others or to go buy a Corvette.
