If you mean Wicca, It started in the late 1940's By Gerald Gardner. If you mean Witchcraft, that is actually several different magical systems, of varying age.

Check out books written by Ronald Hutton and Philip Heselton. Both writers have done wonderful books on the history of Witchcraft.

I suggest reading _Drawing Down the Moon_, by Margot Adler, _Triumph of the Moon_, by Ronald Hutton, and _Bonewits' Complete Guide to Witchcraft and Wicca_, by Isaac Bonewits. Witchcraft was, tratidionally, simply the practice of Folk Magic. Witchcraft as a Religion is a recent invention. Someone asked a very similar question recently. Check out the replies he got;

If you're talking about a family history of "lineage", kind of. I know I have heritage, which has led me to a Celtic (Welsh/Irish specifically) faerie shaman path. I'm not sure though who was the "last" faerie shaman in my family, which means that the "line" has been disrupted to a degree. I'm having to pick up the pieces and learn the path on my own without any mentoring from live family elders (although I am being guided by my long-dead Welsh grandmother), because of migration activity that has separated me and my immediate biological family from the majority of other family clan members. I am in the process of researching family geneology, and hopefully will find the connections I'm looking for to find that "missing link" for who was the "last" faerie shaman in the family, and if they are no longer alive, I'll try to find who would have been closest to that person to see if I can glean information from them... only time will tell if my efforts bear fruit. ;)

[EDIT]
OH, well. Nice thumbs down, lol.
Sorry, I misunderstood the question. But because you didn't specify that you were asking about a book, how was I to know? I haven't heard of this book, but I'm interested, and am going to check it out. Sorry for the unhelpful answer. :(
