A mid-life crisis is an emotional state of doubt and anxiety in which a person becomes uncomfortable with the realization that life is halfway over. It commonly involves reflection on what the individual has done with his or her life up to that point, often with feelings that not enough was accomplished. The individuals experiencing such may feel boredom with their lives, jobs, or their partners, and may feel a strong desire to make changes in these areas. The condition is most common ranging from the ages of 35-50.

Everyone's crisis may be similar or different. For women it may be a sense of being alone because the kids are on their own and don't need you as much anymore. Some fret that they are not attractive anymore and may get a face lift or lose weight to make themselves over.
For a guy, he may feel that life is slipping away and he wants to accomplish some things before he gets too old. That is usually when men dump their wives for the trophy wife or buys a sports car or just disappears and makes a new life for himself.
It is best to be content with oneself. You can always find new interests, travel or meet new friends if things become stale in your life. Maybe volunteer to help others.

Well I can tell you about that one.
When you were 17 you naively envisioned your future as one in which you Drive a Lamborhghini, to your beach house, to meet one of your 3 centerfold girlfriends after making another multi-million dollar deal.
While you now understand that that was a) unrealistic and b) not really what you want anyway - you also realize...
That sitting in a cube for 8 hours a day only to drive your Corolla home through traffic and mow the grass and pick up dog poop is not really what you had in mind either.
So you take action to make your life look more like the former rather than the latter. Often times, this involves reckless spending and other personal vices leaving a disaster in your wake for which the people you care most about will have to pay. Of course, it doesn't have to be that way, and you can take positive steps to find fullfillment without hurting anyone in the process of resolving this totally normal life event.
Hope that helps.

For a woman, it is the time of her life when the children are leaving home to begin their own lives. Mothers suffer "empty nest" syndrome; that is; no more kids underfoot, or toys strewn throughout the house, missing them so bad, and yet, hoping that they make a good life for themselves.
For men, it means looking back at their lives and wondering if there was something that they left undone; or could they have done certain things differently, they wonder if they made the right choices in their life, ect.

When you start doing or buying things that fullfil something that you missed earlier in life or you have to do before you get too old. Although this can be a gray area.
50 year old, sports car for picking up chicks - mid life crisis
50 year old, classic sports car reminding of the past - could be a mid-life or could be a cool hobby

When it happens to you, you don't want to believe it is happening, but it still happens. All around you will notice your difficulties, before you, and say "it is the mid life crisis ". All around you will know your crisis well, except you. So when it comes, just let it be.

When your Dad starts wood carving again and playing the drums. When your Mom decides she wants to be a sex-object again so she can date pilots and works out religiously. When your parents suddenly "don't have any money" (because your Mom bought a $2000 piano because she decided to play it again). When your Dad panics because he realizes he won't be able to get an erection anymore in the future so he tries to "wine-and-dine" women he meets on Yahoo Personals as much as possible. When your Mom thinks it's cool to talk about her sex life with her children. When your Mom contemplates getting her 16 year old son a BMW M5. When your Dad suddenly asks you to take a lot of pictures of him in various different outfits for very suspicious reasons.
