I like these generic phrases:

To gain experience.
To obtain gainful employment with your organization.

Something along that line is what I usually use. Also, what type of company is it? You can always say that you like or are interested in what they do and that's why you want to work for them, or that you've always heard that they are a good company to work for.

There is nothing wrong with the fact that you need money. That at least is honest and shows that you are willing to work to get money. I agree that you can put down the pat phrases but I need to work to pay bills is ok. But why do you want to work at Port City Java and not somewhere else. Or is that only one place that you are applying.

One major reason is: (only if u feel it as true)
Working here makes me learn things i have always wanted, in a disciplined manner. And i consider this place as one of few places which takes me towards my career in the right direction, thus i can avoid possibility of wrong moves as an amateur.

U can add your positive traits in this question. Like saying:

Along with gaining experience in a prestigious place like this, I would like to mingle with people and learn from others.
This gives me a background to develop my personality in a positive way in turn contribute to the company.

I'd consider it a trick question depending on the employer.

They are testing your honesty. If you're truthful and say, "I really need a job right now." that may work.

If you say," I've researched your company and really want to help your company grow." Chances are they know that's a line of B.S. and will act accordingly.

Good Luck.

Let them know that you NEED money but would also like the experience. Works for me.... They would understand because everybody needs money, and because of your mention of that, they would also know that you are about your paper....
