How fitting that you posted this in mythology and folklore. Because it is a myth that there is any such thing as the "Kelly family crest."

That may or may not be a real crest that belonged to a man named Kelly at one time. It would take some research to find out if it is true and who it belonged to. And the odds are astronomically against you being related to that person, even if your name is Kelly.

But it most certainly didn't belong to the Kelly family, because crests can not be issued to a family. They are issued to one person only. Upon that person's death, the crest can be passed down to his oldest son, but the rest of the family has no right to it.

Kelly is the Anglicisation of the Gaelic Ó Ceallaigh, based on the personal name “Ceallach” which can mean either ‘bright-haired’ or ‘troublesome’. The popularity of the name dictated that it would be incorporated into surnames in several different areas across the country, including Co. Meath, Co. Wicklow, Co. Antrim, Co. Derry, Co. Sligo, Co. Galway, Co. Roscommon and Co. Laois. The most important of all these clans was the O’ Kellys from the territory of the Uí Máine, which covered east Galway and south Roscommon, and was known as O’ Kelly Country. Today the name is the second most prominent in Ireland, and is spread throughout the country, being most numerous in counties Galway, Kildare, Leitrim and Roscommon.

Meaning of Kelly
kelly
Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Ceallaigh ‘descendant of Ceallach’, an ancient Irish personal name, originally a byname meaning ‘bright-headed’, later understood as ‘frequenting churches’ (Irish ceall). There are several early Irish saints who bore this name. Kelly is now the most common of all Irish family names in Ireland.
