Hi,

I'm moving from LA to Cleveland as soon as my home sells. I will be visiting LA for a week this Thursday, and I'm trying to come up with a list of good communities to check out while I'm in town.

Here is kind of a synopsis of what I'm looking for:
- good public schools (my daughter will be entering high school soon)
- in reasonable driving distance of Encino since I will be attending school there
- reasonably priced rental units and homes/condos

Although I plan to rent at first, it is my ultimate goal to purchase a home or a condo. So, I'm really looking for a reasonably priced apartment and then ultimately, I would like to buy a home in the same neighborhood within the next year or two.

I am a communications professional and I would be seeking a job that involves marketing communications and/or public relations so proximity to magazines/newspapers/media companies is a definite plus.

Thank you SO much for any ideas that you have--it is much appreciated!!!

You can look at the search list below for lots of other answers to your question.

I think you have chosen the best place to relocate in the LA area. You will find the cheapest rentals around the Van Nuys airport, for obvious reasons, but still very nice. The closer you get to the hills (south) the more expensive, and the further away (north, and also east) are cheaper.

Bear in mind that a recent survey found that the average commute in Los Angeles these days is 2 hours each way.
With that in mind, consider going east, past Calabasas to (Thousand Oaks, etc) for the best schools, and moderate prices.

I agree with the first person who answered. I moved here two years ago from Chicago. I would recommend coming out to LA for a visit to check out the city. That would help you emmensely. I live in Hollywood in a studio apartment for $995/month with all utilities included. Most studios will include all your utilities, which could be very helpful. But I'm not sure how big a space you need. The valley or Pasadena are pretty nice areas. Also check out the apartment listings on craigslist. There is so much you can find there, that will probably help you a lot. Good luck to you in your search and move!
