Serious answer: We always want what we don't have, and reject what we do have. It's just human nature. Cows will often be standing in waist high green grass in a pasture, trying to stretch their necks to eat grass on the other side of the fence...go figure.

Humorous answer: This question reminded me of a book once written by Erma Bombeck, called "The Grass is Always Greener over the Septic Tank".....which of course, states the same philosophy.

If the grass is alway green on the other side, what if you live in the desert or the Arctic?

If we ever develop Aquacities, will the saying change to, the water is always bluer on the otherside?

Who is the herbologist who actually determines IF the grass is truly greener, and do they have a web site?

And if the question refers to wanting what others have because you see them as having a better life, then what if you are Bill Gates?

I prefer the words of very old song, "It's good to touch the green, green grass of HOME."

The image that comes to my mind is that of the other side of the fence between my and my neighbour’s lawn both with ornate with lush green grass and yet if I stand and compare I am likely to see that the grass in my lawn is not the kind of green as the grass on the other side.

I tried fertilizers of all sort and composts but that apparently made no difference. The intrigue leads me to investigate into the matter. Covert operations commenced, pictures were taken, and the opinion of the neighbour was recorded. Finally outside adjudicators decided that they, the grasses are all but the same, equally green and the matter is in the mind.

In short, it is a matter of ‘value for money’, which in this particular case is can be put as ‘value for the labour’. The fact that whatever we achieve we end up valuing according to the efforts we put in achieving that, plays an important part in us taking joy in the possession of that thing.

We put all the efforts in achieving what we have, but we clearly put no efforts in what others achieve with their own efforts. We then think that they have struck a better bargain. Where we unknowingly deduce the cost of our labour from the outcomes of our labour, we give full marks to what others have.

Besides, whatever we have is partly flows into filling the lacks we normally have in our life. For instance, I might feel envious about a person I know driving an expensive car. In my eyes that person is having a ride of his life in the dream vehicle. But from the standpoint of that person that car might not be that good a thing after all. It is possible that that is just a treatment a slightly inflated ego.

Well, if you've ever stood in a field of grass and looked straight down you saw dirt, bugs, discarded trash, some dead grass, and possibly some animal offal, hopefully not on your shoes.
Look away into the next field beyond the fence and you can see nothing but the tall, healthy grass waving in the wind...HEY, it is greener over there!
Another similar saying is that dreams are better than reality.

Mathematically, yes. If someone gives you three choices - and one choice will hive you $1M dollars. You choose, door a, and the (s)he shows you door B and it's nothing -- then he/she gives you the option to chnge. statistically, you're better off changing your answer. Try it with three postit notes. You;ll be amazed how much it works. So yeah - the grass is 71% greener on the other side.

In Spain , they use the word ,green for grass that has just been cut and is too damp to smoke.Essentially you keep it in another room until its dry enough to enter into your living room, and be on your side.Funnily enough , and contrary to public belief, the not so green grass which you have in your hand is a lot better than all this new , funky looking grass over on the other side.Grass on your side , is on your side.

Wrong on all counts. Its just shadier on the other side. lol
Right, philosophy! The universe is expanding and it is to our benefit as humans to help it along. If we don't, it will start shrinking and implode. So we know this on an unconscious level (unless we become superconscious) and whatever we desire, even on this unconscious level, we build receptors in the brain to accomodate it. This feels like an addiction does when it does get fed, pain and suffering. It gets fed with the process of change which is also expansion. Change is symbolized by "green grass" which keeps us "checking them out". Clear?

Its a saying that people take on board to get themselves out of a rut in the daily grind of life.

Unfortunately, this isn't always the case having realized that the grass was not as green on the other side as one originally thought!

Yes you are absolutely correct. one side of a blade of grass is greener than the other side. This is because grass doesnt stand up straight, so therefore one side gets more sun which helps the plant produce more chlorophyll on that side. Chlorophyll is green therefore grass really is greener on the other side . . . . . i think ! lol
