I have a co worker who says how sometimes she thinks of how easy it would be to just "go", but then thinks of her family and those thoughts disappear. She says she doesn't think she would ever kill herself, but feels so numb sometimes and thats when she thinks of suicide- "breifly". She always makes sure to mention how it's out of the question for her, but I'm wondering if thats true. She said she's never attempted to do it; but will see images of herself laying lifeless and it doesnt bother her to see herself that way. This is an otherwise outgoing, sweet young woman who is always being praised at work and I dont know where these thoughts are coming from, or why she even shares them with me. I don't even know what to say sometimes. I don't know any family members or anyone who I could tell. What should I say/ do?

Okay first any who is speaking about killing themselves you should take seriously even in light. The fact that she is saying to you openly is a sign she needs help. One you should listen and be supportive. You need to find out how long she has been thinking this way and if she has a plan. No matter what you need to also inform your boss. She is sharing her thoughts with you because she trust you, so make sure you support her, but please get her help.

For around the first seven years of life- everything is processed thru the emotional brain- the amygdala- The cognitive brain starts to go online at around 7. We are emotional beings, otherwise we would be robots. People have to connect emotionally and have feelings about what they enjoy and want to do- it is the road map to your gifts and what you are here for. There have been some real wrong turns in raising kids, such as orphans raised in Germany where they were fed, cleaned , etc but not much touch or bonding. Many of those infants died and it was from lack of touch. I suggest you try homeopathy for this- it is very good at erasing emotional states that are preventing you from FEELING -due to neglect, trauma, grief, etc- The good news is all of you is there under this stuff and you will start to feel and then you will have interests in connecting, interests in what you want to do- and even be passionate about it. The first thing with depression is to get a physical check up- bc depression can have physical causes, like vitamin deficiency, hormone malfunctions, etc, etc - so you want to go there first. Then I would do the homeopathy- and in your case be upfront about what went on with your parents, especially your mother and start taking a suggested remedy. You can find a local homeopath, who has 5 years exp. has done depression cases, and only practices homeopathy ( not a chiropracter or someone who just adds in homeopathy) You can google homeopaths who have cured depression and find one who does online. You can try working with dr, Judyth Ullman, a Seattle homeopath, naturopath, previous psych counselor who is an author, international teacher, and very famous- she does skype and phone. If money is an issue- try abc homeopathy and a volunteer homeopath will suggest and most important stay with you till you feel well. Remedies are natural, and gentle and at the health stores and online. Homeopathy goes well with therapy also. It does not suppress with medicine it lifts off layers of issues- I hope you try it bc you deserve to FEEL good and you are depressed.

Thoughts do not necessarily lead to action, but if I were in your place, I would strongly advise my friend to seek counseling, preferably in a group where she will learn she is not alone. In a group she will also have unconditional support. Please do not let this pass.
