I believe in what JFK said. I did feel that society owed me when I was a young teen during the Clinton years. I have changed my ways of course since then! I owe society and want to make a positive difference now.

The Single Room Occupancy (SRO) program is authorized by Section 441 of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Under the program, HUD enters into Annual Contributions Contracts with public housing agencies (PHAs) in connection with the moderate rehabilitation of residential properties that, when rehabilitation is completed, will contain multiple single room dwelling units. These PHAs make Section 8 rental assistance payments to participating owners (i.e., landlords) on behalf of homeless individuals who rent the rehabilitated dwellings. The rental assistance payments cover the difference between a portion of the tenant's income (normally 30%) and the unit's rent, which must be within the fair market rent (FMR) established by HUD.

So 30% of an applicants income is not free . Maybe you should find out why millions of people live on the streets before you go talking about free stuff to the homeless.

Having to jump through dozens of hopes to get into these so called free programs means having a job .

Strange that you need assistance when you have a job . That one third of your income goes to rent . That means a minimum wage earner would pay $362.00 a month for rent .

If someone fits your hypothetical but is still is starving or lacking shelter there must be an additional reason. And, yes, the government should provide basic food and shelter. In a rich nation such as the US, no one should starve or perish from exposure.

My question is why are you on all day and night asking these questions? Do you have a frickin job or are you living off the welfare system as well? Or are you really Indian and just live off the annual casino money you get and claim you are independently wealthy?

No they don't owe you a living if you can find a job. How is this for an answer to your constant rants about welfare. Drop it, your Republicans spend more on social programs than democrats do...maybe you should learn something for once and vote for the person you think will stop it since Bush has done nothing but promote it with his ever climing poverty rates. LEARN SOMETHING FOR ONCE TROLL MAN>

Per Westhill "And, yes, the government should provide basic food and shelter. In a rich nation such as the US, no one should starve or perish from exposure."

ATTENTION WESTHILL- In this rich nation, no one HAS to starve or perish from exposure..............But where in the constitution does it guarantee you the RIGHT to food and housing via the backs of your fellow citizens? American's have the right to pursue happiness..........not for it to be handed to them.

Like momma always said, "if it's not worth working for, maybe it's just not worth it."

No, society owes me nothing but the opportunity and that is up to me to perceive and go after.

Nothing regulated and nothing government enforced.
