You are not the only person to have ever done that.
The reason we do things like that is because they fit our intuitive model of the universe. At an early age we learn that more effort equals more work. If we can't open a lid or close a door, we push harder. Often that produces the expected result.
When we operate electrical or machine powered devices, we still instinctively impose our intuitive work-equals-effort model of the universe. Even though we intellectually know that pressing harder does not help, frustration and habit interfere with logic.
The are countless examples where counter-intuitive actions produce superior results. Turning into a skid, braking gently on ice, waiting patiently for an explanation...

I guess it is so that it would help make the wire and the batteries press against each other harder thus triggering the batteries to give out what's left of its power.

no i do that too. i think we are just too lazy to get up and put new batteries in it. we would rather just sit on the couch and try to squeeze every last ounce of battery before it finally goes out. then when it gets really bad, we beat it on the arm of the couch to try to get it working again.

Too make it work. Batteries are like disposable razors. We can get just one more out of them.
