Yeah they are as good as men, just because they are a different gender? Now that you really think about it, women are being denied a job because of their sex, just because they are women doesn't mean they wouldn't know as much as men. True, there are more women umps in softball, but even in the WNBA and other women sports, the majority of the umps and refs and males. Why not women?

This is a pretty good question to ask MLB. I don't think it matters what sex you are to be able to make the best call and that's where there's not a problem. You got to take a look at baseball for a second. Not saying all women are smaller than all men, but the average woman wouldn't compare in size to a professional athlete.(me neither). What's going to happen the first time someone argues her call and makes contact. What if it's an all out bench clearing brawl. The umpires play a major role in calming down players and coaches when things get heated and I don't think a woman would be able to do that. If you watch Baseball there are some pretty big umps out there like ol Jerry Crawford and Joe West. Also, what's going to happen when someone crosses the line and makes derogatory statements. These are just a few of the problems you might face. I think it will happen eventually, just how soon I don't know

There was a female umpire who worked a major league spring training game a few months ago, and from the sound of the article, it looks like the sport is open to the possibility of female umpires at this point. However, it could be a long time before we see any, simply because of the nature of major league umpire hiring.
There are currently 70 Major League umpires, with another 22 AAA umpires eligible to fill in. Compare that with 750 active Major League players (or even 1,200 when rosters expand in September). Also, consider that unlike players, umpires will rarely get injured or demoted, so replacements aren't often needed.
Umpires often have long careers, so there is not much turnover. There aren't any female Major League umpires right now because there previously weren't any female Minor League umpires ready to move up. However, that could change in the next few years.

No ladies are not as good as men and never will be. JK. Seriously though they say you have a better chance of making MLB as a player than you do as an umpire. There are more and more women umpiring in the minor leagues and I think in years to come we will start seeing those in mlb.

Female would be a better word for them than "lady." I am sure there are some good female umpires, and if they were really very good, they would be in the Major Leagues. It is a very competitive field, and evidently women just do not measure up.

Females have the ability to be good umpires. Since MLB only has male player everyone probably feels more comfortable with male umpires. No one should be using foul language towards an umpire.

Personally, I think that ladies are good at umpiring softball games and not baseball games. The risk, personally, is too high for a lady to attempt to umpire a baseball game. I think that a woman could do as good, but I think that there is a major risk for a lady to umpire a men's major league game.

I have never personally seen a female umpire but I heard an interview with a minor league female ump and they were saying she was one of the most consistent (and best) umps in the league. I don't have any problem with a female ump in the majors and think it might be good for the game.

I don't see why they couldn't be. All it takes is an encyclopedic knowledge of the rule book, a keen eye and quick, decisive judgment.
As far as whether players/mgrs would use bad language when arguing with them, I bet woman umpires would actually prefer it, as it would mean they're seen as being no different from any guy ump. And you can bet that if a player/mgr dropped a B- or C- bomb on her, he'd get rung up right quick.

In theory -- yes -- in practice, in the imperfect real world, it will be more difficult for them to get the job done -- regardless, if women are breaking barriers in sports like car racing, its only a matter of time before excellent candidates make it into pro umpire ranks
