are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? why are you giving him water? breastmilk and formula have enough water in so you shouldn't have to give him water (read the article below). give it more time to see if he passes a bm. since he is a newborn he's still just getting used to being in the world and his little tummy is new to working and digesting. Call your pedi if you are concerned.

he may be constipated..thats how it was with my daughter and now she is 3 and a half months old..and she only has 1 or 2 Bowel movements a day...i suggest you calling your doctor to see what you need to do if he is constipated. This is very normal in babies.

Totally normal. Babies' bowel habits change several times before they're a year old. What's normal this month may not be three weeks from now.
As long as he's not in pain or straining to go and passing little pebbles, he's not constipated.
BTW - he doesn't need water at this age. You don't want to fill his little tummy so that his regular feedings don't appeal to him and he starts refusing them. Breastmilk or formula provide ALL the fluid needs a healthy infant needs.

he could be constipated, but it is also normal for a baby to have up to 6 bowel movements a day or just 2 a week! i know that doesnt seem like a whole lot. you could try what my Ped. told me to do and it worked great. try giving him 1/2 teaspoon of milk of magnesia, only a couple days a week to loosen the stools, but be careful not to give it to him more than that because it does give them a little diarreah, then give him some pedialyte that combination worked great with mine. but every baby is different. and if you dont want to give him the M. O. M i would suggest going to your ped. and getting some advice, you could always call and ask a nurse or doctor what you could do too. ive done that plenty of times.

If you are breastfeeding, it is completely normal and okay to not have a BM with every feeding. However, he should be having at least one a day.
If it continues for a few more days and/or he seems uncomfortable (crying, fussy, etc.), I would call the doctor and find out if there's something else you could do.
And FYI, babies should not have water when they're that young...breastmilk or formula is the complete nutrition for their little tummies.

my doc, told me not to give my baby water.. BM or formula is plenty enough hydration... but if your pedi suggested, then hmmm... As for the poops, they have this gastrocolic reflex that makes them poop during or after a meal, it slowly starts fading after they figure out exactly how to poop.. i dont think your baby is constipated.. They all act like they're trying to push a mac truck though their butt... :) they strain so hard you think he cant do it, but he wil... It;s also normal for a baby to wait days between poops.. Only time i'd be concerned is if it's diarrhea, or hard pellets, which will cause pain when he tried to have a bowel movement, so i think your baby is doing just fine!!

My son grew to become into breast fed yet he had a bm for the period of or after virtually each feeding till approximately 3 months...they did no longer initiate spacing out till around 4 a million/2 months while he began solids. His pedi stated this grew to become into widespread for brand new ones.
