I would like one that comes well recommended, but have no one that I know that can provide a personal recommendation. I want to make sure that I have one with a good reputation & that will get things done right & professionally & that gets things done- I don't want this dragging out forever. Looking in the yellow pages, there are SO many. I've heard divorce lawyer horror stories & don't know where to start.

Is there a particular website I should go to look?
And I don't know anything about 'legal aid'.
Please expand on your answers, I really am starting from square one, & know nothing about this at all & need all the help I can get.

And, please let me stress again the fact that I know no one that can give me a personal recommendation - I've already checked with the people that I trust that are divorced (and there aren't that many of them, believe it or not) or that knew of someone who was recently divorced, & they didn't like their lawyers & did not recommend them. I'm not looking for a lawyer that is going to try to take my ex for everything. And I know my ex is going to try to take me for everything. I just want it done simply, & peaceably, & quickly- the least trouble possible, so that we can move on from this.

Sorry, I need to clarify on the additional details directly above. What i meant to say is that I am not looking to take my ex for everything, and I know that he is also NOT going to try to take me for everything. (Made a typo in the one prior, sorry)

For all those that took the time to read my whole question & details & input real answers, thanks so much. I know I'll be able to use a lot of the advice. And this is my first question here on these matters, so, again, I really appreciate your assistance.
Directly for FEYSUNNY- As all others that answered already realized, a general question such as 'How to find a good divorce lawyer" does not require a state-specific answer. I didn't ask about divorce LAWS, which would require such details. Next time you may want to take the time to pay attention BEFORE you challenge someone else's IQ, lol. Have a great day!

Research, Research, Research -- check with your local bar association, they will give you several. Check out their website (if they've got one); check with the local Better Business Bureau, then call them - ask questions. Once you've narrowed it down to 3 or 4 then go see them -- there's nothing like a face-to-face meeting to get a feel for a person. Ask more questions - let them know up front what you think your ex might be planning and find out how they would deal with it to get the results you want. Then go with your gut feeling. Good Luck!

The best thing to do is to check a prospective lawyers track record. You can go on line to your local bar association and check the credentials of any divorce lawyer. Go for one that ONLY handles family matters! Don't go to an all-purpose attorney. Once you've contacted one, don't be afraid to ask key questions directly, such as the duration, cost, conditions, possible adversities and anything else you want to know. Get second and third opinions before deciding on one. Good luck and I hope everything works out in the best interest of everybody involved!

The very best way to find a good lawyer is to get a personal recommendation. All lawyers look good on paper, but only personal experience will tell. I cannot believe that no one in your job, church, social groups, friends and family has not gone through a divorce or knows someone who has. That is statistically impossible. Ask everyone you know, everyone you come in contact with. If you can't come up with anyone, then call 5 lawyers out of the book and ask them to provide recommendations. Rule out the ones who can't.

From reading your blogs prior to this one i see that you are getting quite frustrated about the search for an attorney. Have you tried talking to a facilitator at the court house? You can always meet with this person and ask if he knows of any good attorneys that he could recommend you too. You could also try the Internet search for divorce attorneys near your area and schedule a time to meet with them. Attorney's usually allow at least a half hour to meet without a fee, you can always make your decision that way.

I have gone through my divorce without an attorney and studied very hard to file my documents and let me tell you I spent only $40.00 to beat my ex attorney three times. I'm not saying to do what I did, but you can always start by meeting with the facilitator at the court house and go from there.

Talk to your friends who are divorced. If they lost everything to their ex, then go with the ex's attorney! If they got the majority of things, then stick with their attorney. Divorce will only get dragged out when the two parties start getting stupid. Try to keep things as civil as possible considering the circumstances and hope your husband/wife will do the same. Good luck.

That's tough. Especially finding one with all of those qualifications! Sorry. Can't resist the joke factor with this one. Check to see if your workplace has an EAP. (employee assistance plan). Usually they will have retained a few attorneys for their employee's needs, all remaining confidential from the co. of course. Ask your pastor in confidence if any of the parishoners are lawyers.(if you go to a church that supports this), even ask a bartender! They are usually privy to alot of talk like this. At least they'd know the ones not to pick!

I did an on line search and review for mine, i also got links though these services they provide on advice and divorce?

Anyway, i found a few and just checked them out, so basically reviewed and asked questions. After all it's about you're own life, no?

Phone a few, ask a few questions, process etc etc etc and make sure you ask about fee's or they will sting you, I've been quoted approx £1200 so far in pending SIGH ...But it's got to be done in order for final closure so it's worth it.

Good Luck ..

Find an attorney, who recently seperated from the firm your spouse is using. One with a 4 ft dorsal fin.

Usually you ask around and try to find one of your friends or family that already has had success with a lawyer and go with them.
