3y - 16 + y = 38 + 3y - 47

4y - 16 = 3y - 9

4y - 3y - 16 = 3y - 3y - 9

y - 16 = -9

y - 16 + 16 = -9 + 16

y = 7

3y - 16 + y = 38 + 3y - 47

transpose all the variables (y's) in one side of the equation and all the constants in the other side. when transposing a value, you change its sign. (+) becomes (-), vice versa.

so, 3y + y -3y = 38 - 47 + 16

then solve:

4y - 3y = 54 - 47

y = 7

3y - 16 + y = 38 + 3y - 47
4y - 16 = 38 + 3y - 47
-3y l - 3y
y - 16 = 38 - 47
y - 16 = -9
+ 16 l + 16
y = 7

hope i helped! =))
