The first step is to find a literary agent. There are several websites out there that will help you, my favorite is QueryTracker.net at http://www.querytracker.net/ . It is free and has a list of literary agents and also tools to help you keep track of who you already queried and who you haven't, plus more.

They do a good job of keeping the crooks off their lists, but it is still a good idea to double check at http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.h...

There are a lot of crooks out there. Never pay anyone to read or publish your book. A real agent will never ask for money except as a percentage of your royalties.

Keep in mind that finding an agent and getting published is not an easy process. Some people have to query hundreds of agents before they find one who will accept them (sadly, some never get accepted), but be persistent and keep trying.

Good luck.

In the latest copy of Writer's Market (you might be able to find a copy at your library to browse through) you'll find a directory of publishers that are looking for everything from cookbooks and gift books to series novels to magazine articles to poetry to historical fiction to short stories.

This is a great place to start because it not only will help you research the right publishers for your work, the front has several pages of tips for writing query letters and making sure your work is ready to submit.

Do make sure that your work is thoroughly edited and polished to perfection before sending. Fiction is a fickle world and with so much supply, editors and publishers can absolutely afford to be picky.

Good luck!

If you are new to the industry, it is REALLY difficult to get someone to publish anything you write, never mind a short story. I would suggest you start by getting your name out there. At least if you are doing something (a newspaper, perhaps?), they may not flat out reject you. The competitive market, combined with high cost for production makes it very difficult to get any backing. I am not trying to discourage you, just don't get flustered and give up if you don't have much luck yet. It takes a while.

Good luck!

the quick tale form is all yet ineffective and long previous. there is in basic terms no longer lots industry for it as we communicate. Literary magazines nonetheless do contain a number of it even regardless of the undeniable fact that that's few and lots netween. till you write New Yorker form literary artwork, you may pretty lots chuck the quick tale those days.

If you are willing to self-publish, (also called POD), there are many, depending on where you are residing.
