Does anyone know how risky the procedure to repair or remove a herniated disc is?

Usually the herniated disc can not be repaired and we do bone fusion...joining the vertebrae together. This does limit motility a bit (depends on location) but the risks are very small. We use a general anesthetic with a muscle relaxant and the whole procedure can be finished in less than an hour. If you think of the disc like a very thick jello, it is a shock absorber on the spinal column and protects you from the effects of jumping and shock waves up the spinal column. You won't feel the pain of the removal of the disc but you will have some muscle pain after surgery. A few non-surgical treatments have been back-braces and analgesics but neither will help much.

The procedure to remove an herniated disc is definitely risky because when accidents happen, the spinal cord and the nerves running from it cld be pinched or damaged causing paralysis the extent of which depends on the level where the injury occurs.

Surgery is not the only option for cure. Dr Batmanghelidj, an Iranian doctor, after 20 yrs of research abt water in Iran and the U.S. cites that herniated disc cld be corrected with proper hydration of the body. He says that the vertebral disc contains much water and like water in sponges keep the discs turgid or expanded. When the discs dry up due to water shortage, the discs collapse and pinch on the nerves that pass in between 2 discs. Malalignment of the discs cld also cause injuries to the spinal cord.

Dehydration does not occur with diarrhea or vomiting alone. Dr Batmanghelidj mentions that chronic unintentional dehydration is brought abt by the failure of the person to drink adequate amts of water everyday plus taking in of dehydrating substances contained in other fluids aside from water. These substances are coffee, tea, sodas, chocolates and alcoholic beverages. These will cause U to pass more fluids out of the body than what had been taken in. If this deficit happens daily, dehydration will set in but unknown to the person until he becomes diseased.

So to hydrate properly, follow this method: Dissolve 1/4 tsp of sea salt to 1 quart of water. Salt holds water and will help hydrate the body better. Depending on ur size, take 16-24 ounces upon waking up in the morning, take 8-16 ounces half hr before meals, take 8-16 ounces 2 and a half hrs after meals and then 16-24 ounces at bedtime. When U urinate, replace the water lost with 8 ounces of water. When the body gets sufficient volume of water, it also wld hydrate the discs and the entire body systems as well. Discs will expand or swell when water is imbibed. This releases the pressure against the nerves and so relieves the pain.

Avoid the dehydrating substances substances as mentioned earlier. In case swelling on the feet occurs, discontinue the salt for 2 days and then resume it when the swelling subsides.

Hope this helps.

Any surgery near the spine is dangerous. I had a herniated disc surgery and it did not help my condition. I felt worse afterwards and have never felt better since the surgery, that was seventeen years ago. I have to use deep tissue massage therapy and chiropractic care to relieve the pain.

you have to make the decision of what is right for you. I just wanted to tell you my experience.

Any procedure near the spine is dangerous. I have two worn discs that i was advised to get fused together but declined because it was 50-50 if it worked.

50/50 you have to decide if it's worth it.
I had a lamenectomy in 83. It was worth it to me to be able to walk.
The only downside then was the 4 month rehab.
