The cold war was a response to the end of WW2. With the new destructive power of nuclear weapons, fighting conventional warfare no longer made any sense. So, the emphasis was on spying and strategic alliances and defense pacts, nuclear technology advances and delivery weapons, and that created a new venue for cold, quiet, calculated conflict.

The cold war was the biggest war, with out being a war. The cold war had people on edge all over the planet. Ton's of nuclear weapons were made in this period by Russians and the United States. The cold war played a huge part in the cuban missle crisis in which was probably the closest to a nuclear standoff the world has seen since Hiroshima. Some people question why they call this a war, when there was technically no fighting going on. The war created a nuclear arms race on the planet which had everyone scrambling for Nuclear Technology so they wouldn't be blown off the planet. Leaving many countries today with nuclear capabilities in a time where it shouldn't exist with the current terrorist organazations in the world. Today, Putin the leader of Russia, says that the United States is creating another arms race. As tension heightens, and the relationships crumble with our fierce competitor on that big Asian Contienent. We just may see another Cold War sometime in the near future. Maybe we are already in this "cold war" and the Media hasn't caught on yet. But I assure you, once it has begun, the world will never again, be the world as we all once have known it to be. It will be written in to our history, as the coming of the 2nd Cold War.

Only a paragraph? Well to overview it:
After WW2, the US and the Soviet Union had their own spheres of influence and quite opposite views on how society should be run. Things escalated for decades but neither side wanted a fight because it would be another world war and due to nuclear technology, no one would really win it so instead a series of proxy wars in third-world nations occurred and an arms and culture race continued for the super-powers. Eventually, due to corruption and mismanagement in the Soviet bloc and booming Western economies, dissatisfaction in the East's populations while the West's pop culture spread, and hardline Soviet Premiers being outmatched by tough US leaders like JFK and Reagan- The Soviets lost control and Russia secceded from the Union.

what education level are you writing this for? But since it is just a paragraph, I agree with the previous post about the Cold war being a responce to WWII. Include information about the tensions that grew between the Soviet and the US.
