Yes I think playpens are good to have around but I wouldn't use it as a babysitter. The baby wants to explore and needs to have room to play. The only time I would use a playpen is for a nap or if you have to do something and wouldn't be able to keep an eye on the baby for a minute.

My baby girl started getting up on all fours around 7 months and was crawling by 8 months. I have a play pen, but never put my baby in it to play (just to sleep as people's houses and stuff). She hated to play in it, I think she felt trapped.

I think playpens are only good for if you are busy in the kitchen or doing somethng and need to contain the baby for a little bit. Other than that I don't recommend them because a baby should be on the floor exploring and trying crawl, pull to a stand, etc...

Yes, but I could only get away with putting my kids in it once in a while. Once they taste the freedom of crawling around the house it is hard to keep them confined. I put some toys in it and kept it in the corner of my living-room. It was great to put them in for a little bit if I needed to do something.

They are wonderful to have around, especially if you have things to do around the house and your baby is mobile.
Our daughter just turned 7mths and is crawling everywhere, so if I need to run upstairs or do something in the kitchen she goes in there or her jumparoo.
