It depends what you want. There are a lot of reasonablely priced eating places in Edinburgh, especially if you head off towards the south, and the University (George Square area). There's a very pleasant little tapas and north African restaurant called "Phenecia", on the corner of West Nicholson Street; I've had lunch in there for two with a glass of wine each for £15.
If you want solid comfort food, I'd recommend "Home Bistro", also on West Nicholson Street. A set lunch there is about £7.
If you want vegetarian, Suzy's Diner is very nice - and guess where that is? Yup, West Nicholson Street.
Basically, if you head away from Prince's Street and the Royal Mile, you'll find lots of interesting little places to eat at a reasonable cost. They're everywhere - hence the examples above, to give you an indication of how many restaurants there are in Edinburgh!
If you want to try something sweet, and is an experience in itself, I'd heartily recommend a trip to Plaisir du Chocolat. It's a tea and chocolate shop down Canongate, and is absolutely fantastic. By the time you've had a hot chocolate (with whipped cream and a choice of liqueur) and a slice of the chocolate cakes with various fruits in, you will a) have a sugar rush, b) have that many endorphins kicking around in your system that you won't worry about anything ever again, and c) won't need to find any other restaurants for a long, long time!

Enjoy your weekend in Edinburgh - it'll be fun!

if you walk to the top of cockburn street on the right there is a place that does good takeaway food but its all vegetarian/vegan and is all home made. alot of the pubs along rose street (behind princes street )are pretty good pricewise, if you want fish n chips the rose street fry is good dont go to the princes mall as its all fast food outlets there.there is an old fashioned fish n chip restaurant called "the city restaurant" on south bridge street it does pasta, bagettes, salads, breakfastsand traditional meals as well as all the chippy stuff.its about a 10 min walk from the waverly railway station .hope this helps.if you need any other help try www.edinburgh.org

The Witchery at the top of the Royal Mile has a lovely restaurant called the Secret Garden does two course lunch menus and pre-theatre at a resonable price. I also Iike Valvona & Crolla which is at the top of Leith Walk on Elm Row. I'll think of more and get back to you.....
