From my GCSE science... i would imagine all reproduction first started asexually with bacteria and algae and the like.. then as life evolved from that they discovered sexual reproduction. In humans though, by observing the Australian aborigines (who are most similar to prehistoric people/in prehistoric conditions) its suggested that they don't actually realize the sex act leads to childbirth... so for the creatures that do it for pleasure could be an indicator to how it kicked off!!
Like I said.. very basic knowledge I tried to piece together :S

Reproduction is the plan of the nature to multipy herself in many forms. The ego of the nature wanted to multiply and become many. Perhaps she felt bored after creating such a vast space how can she fill this space so she created the male and the female and planted a desire of hers to become many at her cost .Our own ego is gifted to us by the nature.
She is THE MOTHER . The mother always wants her children to multiply.

reproduction started hundreds of millions of years ago when the first little tiny cell split itself into two and reproduced itself by doing so
that little cell of life contained the patterns of all life that eventually spread and covered the earth, including the organic material that makes soil
before the cell split in two, the earth was a barren rocky place
why it started is harder to explain, my guess is that the universe is made to harbor life and wherever it is possible, life begins

Reproduction started with the beginning of life. It exists to propagate life, not necessarily the species.

Growth requires a new generation with new genetic qualities and advantages, and that requires killing off the previous generation to give them room to grow.
