Fastest: Using UTP (network, ethernet) cable. This require some network setup and creating shared folders etc.

Simplest: If files are smaller than 1 MB, you can use floppy drive. If files are smaller than 4 GB you can burn a DVD.

Expensive: Using an external storage unit. For small files use USB stick. For larger files external USB hard disk...

If files are important, I would burn a CD or DVD, after the transfer you can keep it as backup.

If it is just files there are a number of ways
First of all you may want to compress the files in one envelope so to say so that you only have to one or a number of transfers not a great amount of transfers

try winzip or winrar to compresss
then uncompress on laptop number 2

You can use a usb flash drive is the files will fit on it
you can burn a cd or dvd if both support the format

you can transfer over a router ( i they are both hooked up to a router - cables or wireless)
simply have two messenger accounts to same type

- msn messenger
- skype
- yahoo messenger etc
have to use same service on both

sign into both accounts on the two computers
transfer files from one to another
- the messenger service will connect over the internet but will ttransfer locally over the router - at very high speeds
you can do it manually but this is easier

Cheap and unlimited data transfer would be with a cross-over ethernet cable. No need of hub or router, just plug-in in the ethernet port on both computers and you will go as fast as your ethernet adapter allows (usually 10/100 ethernet)

Other options would be USB flash drive.

I would use direct connect with wireless or infrared as the last option. They are harder to configure.

The best method would be to use a "hub". Connect the two machines together via the hub, set up a home network, and then you can transfer anything you like. Or you can use CD's or thumb drives, etc.

What types of files are you taking about? I would get a jumb drive and just plug it into the USB port(s).
