Does it matter what the people in the UK or Argentina think?

The people who inhabit the Falkland Islands want to be British and consider themselves as such, and for as long as they do I'd happily support defending the country.

The UK has been more than fair to Argentina with the oil deals we offered them if oil was ever to be found on the island, however they recently pulled out of that one, and you can bet when oil is eventually found they'll be claiming they've been hard done to.

In fact the first flag to be raised on the Falkland Islands was the English flag in the second half of the 16th Century. It is also true that for a couple of centuries we did nothing and later reclaimed the islands from Spain. To say they belong to Argentina by proximity is ridiculous since they lie over 400 miles away from Argentina, rather different to something like the Isle of Wight that lies barely a couple of miles and well within the international 5 mile limits. Yes, it is probably true that there is oil and gas there, it would also prove extremely costly to pump out as would the gas if any. Should fossil fuels rise enormously in value, then perhaps the oil and/or gas of the Falklands might become financially viable. Even so, the developement costs would be enormous and the technology advanced, I doubt Argentina could lay out the requirements. (Watch what is likely to happen in Venezuela as an example. Chavez is busy nationalising the oil industry - but it is a ploy. He is at present taking advantage of high oil prices to cover the fact that Venezuelan State Run oil production has been decreasing because they do not have the technology to increase it. This has also been true of countries like Iran and even the newly rising Russian Republic!) Argentina's desires run well outside the norms of common sense. The Falklands are British.

Not sure I like some of these answers.

As for "how would you like it if Argentina owned the Isle of Wight?" Well, if they did own it yesterday, you could be pretty sure that they would not own it today. This was proven in 1982.

It is quite possible that Argentina could have some territorial links with The Falkland Islands physically, BUT the Falklanders are probably the most fiercely British people in the world (maybe Gibraltarians a close second) and no amount of intimidation or political deceit will ever change their minds.
The Falklands are like money in the bank... What would you do if someone stole it?

No - cause the islanders are and want to stay British. If you are thinking that the UK had knicked it from Argentina - than you are right - but the Argentians had stolen their land from the native incas - or whoever. So they have double standards. Its all part of the imperalist game and argentina lost.

But what really gets me angry about the falklands is that the argentians just went in and tried to take it. 1) they did not consult the Falklanders 2) Did not consult us. Therefore they deserved a good thrashing - at least it would have given the native population in Argentina something to smile about!

Yes of course the London Argentinian Community, the new UK is now in a disaster called multiculturalism, or had you forgotten?

I am not against Argentinians at all, but you had better stop talking about British patriotism and talk about UK based multiculturalism. Questions like this no longer fit the PC brigade's allowed questions.

Seriously though I know Latin America and lived there for 2 years. If you know them you will be aware that they have a character which denigrates and ridicules foreigners, this results in them kidding themselves about European people particularly Americans UK people and Europeans.

In other words they convince themselves of anything in this case that the UK people were soft jokes and stupid.I believe they went to war thinking we are like the UK tourist who does not speak Spanish and they have a good laugh at.

They leaned the hard way that the FALKLANDS are British and will remain so

The answer is with the Islanders themselves.

They consider themselves British and are proud to do so.

Therefore the Falklands are British.

Malvinas is a made up name by a group of Fascists in the Government of Argentina at the time, propping up there failing regime with war.

Hello there, I'm Florencia and I'm from Argentina. Even though I'm not British (and even though I was born after the war) I think I can give my opinion on this issue. It is clear that the Falkland Islands belong to the UK now, but did they have the right to take them on the first place? The Islands are not in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, they are near the Argentine border, so logically they should belong to us. England has always had the habit to invade territories and that cannot be denied. But that doesn't mean it was a good idea for us to rush into a war against a "giant" like England in military terms. You might think that we all decided to invade the Islands, but don't forget that should there have been a democratic government in Argentina at that time, the war would have never happened. The invasion was only a move made by a "de facto" government that was crumbling and Argentines were stupid enough to support them. And meanwhile, our 20-year-old soldiers were starving to death and freezing.

What can I say as an Argentine? I can say that it's a waste of time to keep on claming sovereignty over the Islands because it's unlikely that we will recover them. It bothers me the fact that England has got something I consider should belong to us. Nevertheless, I will never forget the good heart of the Islanders who fed our hungry Argentine soldiers even when they weren't allowed to. It reminds me that it was all about politics... nothing else.

Maybe I was a bit off-topic when writing... I think that most British think that the Falkland Islands are theirs, that's for sure. After all, it's their people we're talking about.

Neither. The islands belong to the islanders. They've been in the islands for nine generations. The infrastructure, economy and society of the islands was built entirely by the islanders. It's their home. They want to be a British territory and I think the world should respect their wishes.

Once blood was spilt on the Island then Argentina lost all rights to it.Who knows what the future holds one thing Argentina will never be given the Falklands.

The Falkland Islands have never belonged to Argentina (we took them from Spain), they just happen to lie off their coastline (some miles, I grant you.) The future of any country should lie with the will of the inhabitants who, in this case, have thrown in their lot with Britain. Let that be an end to the matter. She is a self-governing overseas territory of Great Britain
