hopefully they will be when they come home. Although it will probably be neglect not abandonment. The parents behaved irresponsibly, they have a duty to protect their children and they failed in doing so

Weatherman? Where have you been the past month? Even they sort of in weird kind of way admit it. They left 3 toddlers unsupervised for 3 hours and God knows how much longer had Madeleine not turned up missing. It may not be considered abandonment because they did come back. I would refer to it more as child neglect which is also a crime punishable by the courts. It is against the law to leave a child alone in Portugal under the age of 8. LAW>>>L-A-W!!!!!! If one law broken is not punished they hey maybe all laws should be treated equally. Lets punish whichever ones we feel like. That would lead us to a more evil world. And well Hey I think I am going to go on my next holiday to Portugal and have a good time and leave my kids behind because I would have a great fight on my hands wouldn't I. They couldn't morally punish not rich and successful me because they didn't the McCanns right? Everyone will have to get away with it. Sets a poor example to all others. But just like Miss Hilton...she is being treated differently because of her social status. I decided to ask a friend who is a guard in a prison. Minimal security that is what would happen to a lower class individual serving time for the same thing as Paris if he or she got a rash. He said the nurse in the infirmary would have put hydro cortisone on it and sent them back to her cell but that is after she found the time to even look at her.

They are a very canny couple who know how to get out of tight corners!
I see this whole sad affair as one big scam! Did Maddy ever accompany the McCaans on holiday? Was she seen on the flight from the UK to Portugal? Why was it only her that was abducted? If it is true about this mysterious disappearance could it have been someone that the child knew and therefore felt safe with?
The plot thickens and the McCaans are getting richer by the day! I urge people to stop giving and to sit back and think about the new lifestyle the McCaans are now enjoying...

Disagree with Mr. Taco; they didn't leave them alone for a few minutes, they went out for dinner/bar.
Hopefully they are charged soon; but i have a feeling it will be different charges than child abandonment.

I think it is because they have money. I don't understand why they didn't just pay for a babysitter to travel with them. (I know several middle-class families who do this). Apparently, they are wealthy.
A child endangerment charge seems more appropriate than child abandonment; depends on the laws over there, though.

They did not abandoned their children, but certainly should have had a sitter with them. They will always suffer with this loss and I pray little Maddie is still alive.

For the same reason that just about every parent on earth is not arrested for leaving their kids by themselves for a few minutes.

Who says they actually abandoned any of their children?
