You decide to return to school full time to change careers, and you will work full time while completing the program. You talk it over with your spouse, and they say they will be supportive.

If you are the one returning to school, what do you expect from your supportive spouse? If you are the one who agrees to be supportive, how will you be supportive?

1. If they are supportive, they will help out with cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children.
2. They will make situations conducive to studying and not bother you while you're trying to get schoolwork done.

"Be supportive" means that they will encourage you and accept your decision to go. They will do whatever they can, within reason, to help. When you have a crappy day, they won't say "I knew you shouldn't go back to school." When you have a good day, they will be glad. It means they will accept that you may have to tighten your belts and they may have to make some sacrifices. Most importantly, it means they will listen to you as you begin this new experience, because undoubtedly you are going to be talking about it a LOT.
