We have a ringneck turtle dove visiting our bird feeder in Central IL! We live in a city, which makes it even more odd. Has anyone else ever seen one wild like this? Or is this most likely a domesticated bird that has escaped? Research on the net makes it sound like the latter is more likely. However, he is very skittish around us. It is a mystery! Thanks.

Ring neck Doves used to be the most popular form sold in pet shops until customers became aware of the long life span, so as with anything else people get tired of, they have released them into the wild. The Ring neck Dove is prolific but I don't think it can overwinter in our colder climates. At least I hope not, because it will overtake the Mourning Dove, our native species, which mate for life, and in some areas of Missouri, are on the decline. Since doves are lighter colored and don't fly fast, they are easy pickings for hawks.

Ringneck doves have escaped from captivity and have established themselves in several US cities. I've seen flocks of them in the central part of Houston, Tx
