Carnegie Mellon University (www.cmu.edu) is one of the best colleges for engineering in the world. Its located in Pittsburgh PA. On top of that, you have University of Pittsburgh (www.pitt.edu) and Robert Morris University (www.rmu.edu) in that area too. Then you have Penn State University (www.psu.edu) which has locations all throughout PA, but University Park and the Behrend (Erie) campus are the most well known. The Behrend campus is where our company hires tons of engineering grads from because they have a top notch capstone development project that fully justifies the degree. I work on many complex subsystems for NASA, so I would reccomend any of those schools, but the top two would be CMU or PSU (Erie Campus). Any school will work, but make sure you put your time in and also do some extra research work with professors there. Plan on going on for an MS and maybe even a phD if you want to be an actual engineer for NASA (minimum requirement is an MS).

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, located in Troy, New York, is a really great school. Troy is located about ten minutes north of Albany, New York. I don't think it would be too far for you. You can get there by Amtrak.

In addition to academic excellence, the school also offers exceptional financial aid. My son and daughter are mechanical engineer graduates of Rensselaer.

I've heard of CMU, but I've also heard that Lehigh Unversiety has a great 5yr program too.

Good luck! Maybe I'll see you there(HAHA, JK)
