My new Dell Inspiron 6400 has a separate partition (D:) with recovery software that takes up about 10 gigs of disk space. I received CDs with my laptop to reinstall Vista, drivers and utilities, and software. So I don't think I need the recovery partition. I'll probably burn it onto a DVD just to be safe. I'd like to be able to use the 10 gigs.

If you have a way of reinstall the software is needed (such as the Windows CD), then you do not have to have the revocery partition.

Note that Windows does NOT include any way of readding that D partition into your C partition without wiping all the files on the C partition. You would need a program such as Parition Magic to do that.

You might also consider just deleting all the files from D drive and then using it as a backup drive or data storage drive rather then trying to delete the partition.

That partition contains all of the data that is required to restore your system in case of a major crash. You should back that partition up to a DVD or a group of CD's. There is usually a set of instructions that show you how to do this. But in any case, don't delete this partition until you have saved it one way or another.

that disc that you got from dell with your operating system on it. insert that into the dvd drive and reboot the computer. the computer should tell you to press any key to boot from disk so push any key. select install fresh microsoft and then there will be a partition screen you can delete and format harddrive space there. then you can exit without actually installing windows.
