Each ID control can handle two devices. If the IDE cable in your computer does not have two connectors, you will have to replace it with one that does. (Go to any electronic or computer store to buy one.)

On the drives, usually near were the power and ribbon cables plug in, with be a set of jumpers. These are used to tell the comptuer which is the first device (the "master") from which to boot Windows, and which is the second ("slave") device. You will need to have the hard drive set to "master" and the dvd set to "slave". Look on the drive for either a small chart that shows on to set the jumper(s), or lettering on the jumper itself to show "master", "salve" and "cable select".

You can with a master-slave config, but be warned that with IDE, the transfer speed is determined by the slowest on the chain. Better to daisy-chain 2 HDD and use the DVD on it own cable.

Yes...
Look at the back of each device and move the little plastic jumper on each to the "CS" option.

CS = Cable Select. This will automatically sort out the master/slave settings for the drives and the BIOS can then detect the devices.

yes but one must be set to "master" and the other "slave" or if political correctness has caught up yet, "primary" and "secondary"

their is a jumper on the back of each drive and you have to look for the diagram that shows you what pin configuration is neccessary.

you might not have to change anything at all if the jumpers are set to "CS" or "cable select" which automatically determines primary & secondary drives. sometimes you still have to change to master/slave if cable select is not working though

Yes as all the above answers state. There is a slight drawback in that the Slower DVD/CD may slow down the transfer rate of your hard drive. Also when writing to DVD/CD from your HD you may find that you have to record at a slower speed than maximum as the throughput is slower on the same channel than on separate channels.

yep, just set the hdd as the master, the dvd as slave, shouldn't be a problem at all.
