ring land registery they will tell you

In England my house built about 1966 the deeds show the fence I own is -the right hand- side with my back to the house looking down the back garden, which is different to what others have said. The back fence belongs to the other side. There is no substitute for looking at the deeds.
Your local council [the one you pay council tax to!] land registry department might be able to help.
Many houses built pre 1939 just do not show anything and it is often held that that the fences are jointly owned..

Which Garden Fence Is Mine

In earlier times there were rules as to which side of your property had to be fenced,

Now days in residential areas people but up fences where they want them. The fence can be any where on your property.

But if it is on the lot line the post should be on your side if you put up the fence.

A permit is usually required, but not always gotten.
You can check the records & see if a permit was ever issued.
You can have a survey done to see who's land the fence is on.

Is the fence in need repair or do you feel that it is on your land?

But it is best to talk to the your neighbors about it first.

You don't need the deed, you need to look at the site survey on your property. If the fence was erected on your property, it is technically your fence.
That being said, most neighbors share the costs of any fence repair/replacement that is needed. You don't say what the issue is with the fence, but if your wanting to repair or replace part of it, walk over and talk to your neighbor about it. You might get him to chip in either labor, money, or both.

generally looking out into your garden your fence is down the left hand side, if the fence is in need of repair it is normally up to you to replace that side but sometimes if you do have nice neighbours like us they were willing to pay half as long as my hubby did the work (which was fair enough)

If you don't have acess to the deeds (and in good terms with your neighbours) you can ask them to see their deeds. Their walls should be marked on their deeds, and sometimes you can see the marks for all neghbouring houses too. On the plans they usually mark the walls that belong to the owner with capital T. Sometimes your local council (the planning department, if I am not mistaken) can tell you who's wall it is.

"Usually" the fence posts are on your side. The fence itself, that is attached to the posts, is on the side of your neighbor.
