EVERY situation is different:

Some factors that causes these multiple situation:

Finances
House
Children
Names on property (other than house)
Reason for the separation
Severity of how one/both feel about the seperation

Just these 6 alone if all considered is over 200 different possible scenarios.

Now add one more, and another, and another.

Any way, usually, what most people expect at least is that one is not happy with the other and moves out for a consideration period, they "negotiate" and then make their decision on what they are going to do. Usually, its one waiting to see what the other is going to do.

Separation usually means living apart. I have known some couples that have stayed in separate areas of the house during a separation due to legal reasons such as property division and abandonment issues.

Separated means living in different residences. However, I strongly recommend against it. I have heard of a few success stories, but the majority of people who separate go on to divorce. If you don't want to divorce, don't separate! Do whatever you possibly can do within the marriage to make it work.
