I personally think people are already too worried about that Great statistic (mortality). It happens to every one one way of another. Looking at statistics is not going to give you any more information on how or when or why it is going to happen to you. We already know the hows and whens of our own birth. Statistics are only useful if you have to decide on policies that affect large quantities of people. Most of us are lucky not to have that responsibility. Even then you have to remember that cause and effect are not always directly linked, and that your statistics are not always accurate.

I was reading economic statistics and Fukue the Governor of the Bank of Japan thinks they should put up interest rates like us British - they copy everything! Their interest rates are around 1% which makes the Japanese people who save hard velly happy. They put their money in banks in New Zealand where interest rates are the highest in the world - and so the value of the New Zealand dollar goes up and the Yen goes down. I think Governor Fukue although he is over 70 years old has a point. Economic ststistics can be fascinating and profitable. I'm betting on the FTSE 100 dropping like a brick in a few months time on the same day as the MPC make their decision at the BoE. I can double my money easy!

Statistics are best for the statiscians. People are so diverse and different that putting any or all of us into some category is almost ludicrous. To say that one out of every four people is mentally disturbed is scary. Just think of three of your normal friends, and then you become the one mentally disturbed. We used to say that half of all married people are men. We can't even say that anymore.

No matter what you or your tv tell you, the vast, vast, vast majority of people are numbers.
In a database. Being watched by other numbers. In another database.

We aren't statistics...we may be tallied up someday in a count, but that doesn't define our life - we do.
