What has work got to do with Fate?
Curious question you have there.

Depends on your beliefs, if you say work is more important than fate it likely means you don't believe in any pre-determined fate and you work for money to define your own life. For those who put fate first they probably believe that if something is going to happen then fate will find a way no matter how hard they work.

I would guess that many who have an opinion on the issue are basing the opinion on their own experiences or someone else's.

I heard that a recent study concluded that hard work pays off more often than not, but I don't know who conducted it, how the conclusions were reached, or where to learn more about the study.

Fate happens, regardless if you work towards it or not.
Even being idle and bone lazy is accomplishing your fate.

It's one of those annoying little things you just can't get out of.
