My own interpretation is that Team McCann did a bit of research after being told last week that many people considered their behaviour odd in the circumstances, and have discovered that a few more than a 'small number' of people are critical of them....
"Time for some damage limitation here Team - lets retire from public view so that we can 'grieve', and people will stop thinking we are so cold and will donate more money".
Given their previous insistence on a European tour, and coming so hard upon the heels of last week's experience with the German Press who are not so obliging as the UK media and will ask more awkward questions, I find this sudden retreat more than a little transparent.

People don't just grieve when there's been a death - grief is a natural response to any sort of loss - you could grieve after the loss of a job or something of sentimental value. The stages of grief happen to different people in different ways & I guess that reality is sinking in for them. I wonder where they will go from here & what they will do next. Perhaps a period of reflection might help them to consider a public admission of their gross error. I'd certainly feel different towards them if they would only admit "we were totally negligent to leave our 3 children unattended" rather than - we were naive but please contribute to our limited company.
Whatever - I truely hope that the outcome is positive & soon.

Grief is very personal and no two people act the same. To speculate on how precisely someone should grieve is really ignorant.
Money is the root of all evil thoughts here, how many gave. I suspect no one that has, yet are saying how it should be spent. Write the script for them, see if it makes a difference

I think I would be grieving in my daughter had been missing this long, maybe they are just burnt out! The press cant always be taken seriously you know - if the parents had said this directly then it could be a little fishy but under the circumstances a little slip of the tongue may be excused I reckon. They won't be a their mental best right now!

I'd be amazed if she is still alive. The chances of a small girl being abducted are very remote. The chances of finding a kidnapped small girl alive after a day or so of being missing is even slimmer. I think they (and the rest of the world) need to move on, as tragic as it is.

I don't think they will ever give up until they have good reason to.what happened about that so called phone call that police received the other day?? anymore been said? all I can say is my heart goes out to them and it makes me want to hug my children more than I already do.

they need to accept the situation for what it si. even if Maddy is still alive the chances of them seeing her again are slim, so while until they find a body they will still hold onto a little hope they need to grieve for their loss and move on for the sake of the twins!!

It's always about what the McCanns need. They need money. They need support. They need a break from it so they can grieve. It's all a shame that so many people keep missing the point. What Madeleine needs, which is to be found.

Who knows? This announcement came right after the German Reporter asked them if they were involved. Like the day of or the day after. Just 2 weeks ago they said they will never stop. So I find that odd.
