Try plugging it into the ethernet socket. Modem cable is a different connection.

The problem you're experiencing is because the connector is not for a modem, but an RJ-45 ethernet connector. The ports are different sizes.

The way i connected my ps3 to the internet was with a wireless adaptor and ave had no probs with doing it that way

dont try to stick rj45 into rj11 slot
you are trying to plug it into phone line slot
