Yes. I've been in two close girlfriends' weddings. Neither of them sent me so much as a thank-you card. In fact, I never heard from either of them ever again. When a third friend asked me, I said no. I explained what happened before, made it into a joke about my being a wedding jinx, and she wasn't the least bit put-off. In fact, we are still friends.
I highly doubt this could be your situation. The point I'm trying to make is, if you have a reason why you have to say no (time, transportation, or money restrictions, or other stresses you are going through right now) your friends and family will understand.

Yes, I have had many invitations and did not go. I also have done best man before, that was more traumatic for me than my own wedding.

I just caught my husband cheating when my sister asked me to be in her wedding. I felt bad but I just couldn't at the time.

Yes - my cousin wanted me to be a bridesmaid, but I said I'd rather just be there to see her get married, not be a part of it, a position from which I could have easily ruined it.
