I would have to say that it is a safer place, with gates because you would be less likely to have a person get in then ungated. But there have been cases where the gates didn't stop the intruder. But most gated places are where the rich live, so if some one thinks they will get away with some thing then they will go in. The community is only as safe as your gate guard & the residents to keep and eye out for each other anyway.
