Friends will always betray, so keep some distance, and don't expect people to treat you how you treat them. It does not work like that. People move on, they form new alliances, with money, partners, etc. You can stay on friendly terms for life. But I have a feeling people expect miracles from a friendship. Always get it straight, a friend will always choose their family before you, and will never put themselves out every time you need help. Strong friendships do exist, but the ones that last are the ones where you don't expect anything from one another.
Acquaintances are fun, the pub would be a lonely place without them.
