Your personality traits, your attitude, you work, your activities, your perception, your judgement, your knowledge, your skills --- all these factors count. And there are lots more. It's not easy to become popular so try to get all the important factors working well.

Be good to the people around you. Never talk bad about anyone. Smile. Laugh at peoples jokes- even if they aren't funny. Be a friendly to people when they're "in trouble" with everyone else and don't have many friends. Listen to people when they have things to say. Always let them know you understand what they're talking about. You don't have to agree.
Be interesting. Try new things. You'll have more things in common with more people and more to talk about.
Most of all, be your own person. Most people are followers and tend to give a lot of respect to people who do their own thing.
