I'm a teacher at a high school. I've just been chosen to be a mentor/coach to help a 16 year old student with her schooling. One of her problems is gaining confident in her classes and I am to help her to motivate and stay focused. What are the best ways that you find it is useful to be motivated and gain confidence?

Mentoring someone /a student is delicate & a serious job.
Basically find out his/her background & parents. If parental care is good & family background is good, just check up whether parents fire mentee & put pressure to be competitive (which tempermentally some may not like.
Teenagers are in transition stage towards maturity & childish tendency still prevails to be always at receiving end & (spoonfeeding).Naturally facing realities is out of question & they will be exhibitting peripheral adult character before all & think they are grownup. For some the behaviour of classmates instill confidence if well cared by parents & for those who are underprivilaged lack of confidence may develop because of comparison in merit/money issues/dreams unfulfilled.
* Show realities (with sugar couted quinine) assuming you are mentoring your own child.
* Identify wrong notions about confidence with your mentee
* Find the causes for lack of confidence & problems in studies at school & personal level.
*If lack of parent support is seen call parents if accessible & inform them to give confidence to the child.
* specify the benefits of studies & world realities to face & how education brings capability.
* delicate issues like moving with bad association & its implications should be appropriately explained as if you are her paraent.
*Specify good dreams to be followed.Teenagers have tendecy to dream & see world through their dreams.Highlight how good/realisitc dreams can be achieved with hard work.
*They can have a tendency to take shortcut for escaping hardwork.Mention the advantages of hard work culture.
Suggest some of the following books to read
Lord Chesterfield letters to his son ,& Advise to youg person
How to be good in studies & score good marks published by Ramakrishna Mutt (Advise to students series)(Title- I am the Maker of my own destiny)
How to score good marks published by (Ramakrishna Mutt)(title may not be correct please verfy)
Books of Napolian hill -Many books are available
Stphen covee(Seven habits of highly effective people) if your mentee can understand Covee book.
one can understand that advising is easy. Before telling someone we should parctice at our level. similarly mentor should carefully handle conflicts of values, ethics, which may boomarang upon mentor( if mentee feels practice before preach( if she is a good observer of one mentroing))
Good wishes

I'm a sixteen year old girl.
It's all in the person. If they're going to work, they're going to work, otherwise if it's not in them you can't force it out of them. They've either got it or they don't - some people are just motivated to achieve and other's aren't. You can't change a person's nature.

If they have dreams that intertwine with the road of education they will wish to learn.
