Hi Acashia,
I like your question, since it deals with the secret of life itself. It is not just any past. You do not hold on to drinking some water yesterday. It is intense feelings good or bad. Say you had the worst experience of your life ever yesterday. You will be thinking about it. The same with the best experience ever.
It is all about time and being in the present. You have to find the core of you where there is no time and space. Read the short article on the site below and you will start to hold on to the past less as you become more in the present.
When you are totally in the present then you will be enlightened and feel perfect peace, endless love and limitless happiness all the time.

Maybe we should ask Al Sharpton.
The past can be used to support an agenda. The past is what is, or what was familiar. It's part of who we are, or were, and it can be like cutting off a limb.
But I truly believe that in order to have any hope for a better future, there are definitely times when it is absolutely necessary to let go of the past...
...amputating it like a gangrenous limb.

Because the past cannot be changed. Anything that happened in the past, stays as a fact and effects the present.

THE PAST IS WHAT MAKES US MORE MATURE AND WHO WE ARE SO IT'S HARD TO GIVE UP ON THOSE THINGS THAT WE TRULLY LOVED AND IT COULD BE A PERSON OR AN EXPERIENCE. JUST TRY TO LIVE THE PRESENT AND SEEK THE FUTURE. THE PAST WILL STAY IN THE PAST.

Because it lingers in your mind forever. If you want to forget it, just believe that it's something in the past, it finished and you can't do anything now. Start a new day, a new life :)

Some people dwell on it - others learn from it and let it go. It has a lot to do with you and your mindset.
You can not change the past - you can learn from it.

because the past is always a part of you and your memory forever. when people say that they let go of the past it still haunts them though they try to forget. conciously you may really forget but sub-conciously you never ever forget what happened.
