You'd be able to get closer to the window if it wasn't there...I'm sure people would rather smash their mirrors against the window/employee rather than the pole...right?? (lol) or maybe I'm wrong...Things that make you go "hmm."

I can't believe all the ignorant posts here... you can't be serious.
it is a good question, and the best answer is the same reason why there are poles/posts near ATM's, drive up windows, gas pumps, etc. TO PROTECT THEM FROM STUPID DRIVERS WHO CAN'T CONTROL THEIR CARS
duh!

It's usually a concrete-encased steel pole....very sturdy. It's there so some psycho driver doesn't drive into the window area.

Also, it's best for them if you smash and ruin your mirror on something of theirs that can take it rather than smashing it into the window and ruining both your mirror and their window.

It's cheaper for the fast food restaurant to fix the pole than fix the building, if someone is a bad driver. It's actually a pretty good idea.

To prevent people from taking the phrase "Drive Thru Window" literally. You'd be surprised at how many people try, especially when intoxicated.

It's so you don't get too close to the window. You need some space and some people could be drunk you never know with people.

That attitude of rather smash their mirror against the employee is why they do it. They can't afford to replace workers everytime you misjudge the length of your arm.

it is there to keep people from being able to get too close to the window and then be able to reach in and grab the employee, and harm them.
