Sorry, I did not make this very clear. I know I can buy them from leading stores, but where on the plant do they come from! I can see cucumber seeds, I know potatos grow from seed potatoes, where do lettuce grow seeds from?

Lettuce will produce a flower if you leave it in the ground too long. The flower will produce seeds.

If you leave a lettuce plant it will 'bolt' which is when it grows a long spiky flower from the middle of the plant. If this is left bees will pollinate it and it will set lettuce seeds. Many years ago I worked on a farm in Northern Denmark where were grew many different crops for seed production including lettuce.

You can buy lettuce seeds in packets (all sorts of varieties) from places like Woolworths, Wilkinsons, Lidl, all Garden Centres and DIY outlets. At the start of the seed planting season (say Feb/March) Wilkinsons and Woolworths have been doing BOGOFs on seeds for the past couple of years.
If you already have lettuces growing, don't cut them but allow them to flower and "go to seed". Collect seeds and dry them to use next Spring or under glass this Autumn.
The flower stem grows up from the centre of the lettuce - it's not very spectacular - small greeny yellow flowers.

A lettuce if left to develop and not picked for salad will eventually produce a small flower which is pollinated and seed is formed, which when ripe can be planted to produce more lettuce plants. You normally would not see this as virtually all lettuces are picked while relatively young as they are fresher and crisper.

I think if you let lettuce grow to it's full extent it will 'Go to seed' after flowering' but I'm not 100% cretain of this!!
