Man, you car has issues. So, are you saying that AFTER taking the CD player out, all your troubles began?

Dash lights work and headlights don't because most cars have a main block of fuses in the engine compartment for headlights and a few other high energy draining items. These blocks are on the top of the fender on the inside and should be easily accessible and under the cover, a diagram of which fuse block does what. That's probably what happened to your headlights. I think the heater motors get their main power from the same main block. That would account for your headlights and heater.

If they work over a bumb, it's possible the fuse is still blown but the vibrations is making contact enough to make the item run. Or, loose connection. I'm betting on the first, rather than the last.

Orange wire. You'd have to have a wiring diagram to know what it is and where it goes. British cars used to be very detailed in the owner's manuals as far as color codes for wiring. You miht be able to look this up on a website devoted to your make of vehicle. You have to realize that when it melted, it melted all the way back to the source. That could be the fuse block, the ignition or close to the battery, depending on what it is and does.

As far as the orange light, look to the owners manual to see exactly what it is. It may or may not be connected to your problems.

The glovebox noise, hard to say. Wiper motor running. Heater motor trying to run but can't.

Check the wires coming off the starter to see if they show signs of melting and note the color of any smaller ones. If you signs of melting, you should have cause to worry and have it looked at. Otherwise, it's a matter of trying one thing after another to fix these problems. Either you do it yourself and try to correct it, if it's something simple and/or something you can handle, or you take it to a shop. You take it to a shop, they'll do the same thing and try one thing after another until they find out what the problem is. And, guess who pays for their trial and error?

If they can plug into the computer and get an error code, you'll probably luck out. But, I kind of feel like it's a loose wire and bad connection.

Argh! Not another one! How old is your car? We have a 96 N-reg 405, it started playing up, engine running, the water temperature gauge needle drops, so doesn't register and starts the electric fans, the air bag warning light came on, art. Fuse gets replaced, then a few days later, smoke from steering wheel and fuse box!!! Orange light? I think it the engine management Which could mean the car's brains have gone. The noise from the glove box? we also have that- hubby (the mechanic) says it's a relay switching on and off!
