Ok, I took the following off the FAQ section of the site listed below:

"How do I sharpen my katana?

Technically, any fine grinding stone will sharpen your katana, but usually is not recommended. this is because you want to keep the clam shape fo the sword, and not have a slight wave (if done improperly). Use a ceramic cross-bar knife sharpener with crossbeams, so that both sides are sharpened at the same time. It will also take fewer strokes to sharpen a blade this way, which saves metal.

Some people thinks that buffing wheels will do a better job, but you will risk creating a bevel on your blade edge.

We recommend you not to modify your katana in any way youself unless you are a trained swordsmith. There are commercial services available which can sharpen your sword for you, though they are very expensive and charge per inch of blade sharpened. We priced our katana so that you will be able to purchase a complete replacement for less than it would cost you to sharpen your beat up sword."

Hope that helps.

Using a stone, you let the stone slide along the length of the sharp edge. Keep the stone on the angle they used originally.
Depending on the kind of stone you use you make it wet with oil, water or spittle, when you buy a new stone either the instructions or the seller can tell you which is best for that stone, when it does not tell, water is the safest bet.
If you do not have a stone and can not buy one, I have had good results with slate, the kind they also use for natural roof tiles.

Only sharpen your blade if you want to use it, a sharp sword on the wall is no use, and a potential hazard. Let those friends laugh and tell them to get their own blades.

If you have more questions, the forum I mention as source has a few blade enthusiasts, but there are also many forums just on blades.
